This page will introduce the people
that are involved with making the
"Bulisa Project" a possibility.
William Sullivan (Bill) was born in
Nebraska in 1957. His parents, Tom
and Shirley Sullivan still live in the
small town where Bill grew up. Bill has
four brothers(Mike, Jon, Dave, and
Mark) and two sisters(Nan and Kate),
and also has a son(Sean) and
daughter(Olana) of his own. As an
adult, Bill raised his two children by
himself for many years. It was only
after his kids were grown that he
started setting his sights on missionary
work. As of April of 2007, Bill lives in
Monterey, California with his wife Heidi.
Bill operates three businesses in that
area. He has a retail store, a party
rental business, and manages a
vacation rental business. He also is a
Court Appointed Special
Advocate(CASA) in Monterey County,
which mentors troubled and at risk
youths in the area.
Heidi Sullivan is a Registered nurse who lives and works in Monterey County, in California.
She is now bringing her nursing skills half way around the world to assist the people of
Bulisa, Uganda. She has been instrumental in teaching methods for disease control and
hygiene for the patients, as well as the staff. She purchased and distributed mosquito nets
for the local people, and for patients at the clinic. Her work in Bulisa has been a cornerstone
of our success there. She also assists in fund raising efforts in California.
Father Jim Short met his wife in Arua,Uganda. Philista was a widow with
two children, Willy and Christine. Although it is unusual for a widow to
remarry there, Philista and Jim were married in 2005.
Philista was raised in a typical Ugandan village, and received her first
pair of shoes when she was 10 years old. She learned to dig with a hoe
and carry water on her head with a gerrycan. She was always a good
student, and attended Makerere University (the Harvard of Africa) on a
full government scholarship to study geography. She taught there after
her graduation, and then went on to study at Clark University in
Worcester, Mass. on another full scholarship provided by the Ugandan
government and Clark U. She got her Master's degree there in
international development. She also has a degree in fashion design
from Evelyn School, and she became talented at sewing and design.
Philista has also worked for World Vision in Kampala as the staff
development officer, and for CRWRC(Christian Reformed Church),
doing community development work in the northwest corner of Uganda.
As of this writing, Philista is directing the new vocational tailoring school
in Masindi, and starting a local garment and craft business that will
specialize in African clothes, designs, and handcrafts. She is an amazing
woman with a deep understanding of the Ugandan culture. She will play
a very important role as we move forward with our project.
Father Jim Short was ordained in June of 1977. Jim went to college in
Pennsylvania, and then on to Oxford and CDSP, Berkeley, Ca., for
theological studies. Jim served several small churches in the Diocese of
San Joaquin in California, and at the same time ran a successful
insurance business in the Fresno, CA area. Jim first went to Uganda in
2003, and he was a "tentmaker", or "worker priest". Jim's father was an
Army Officer, and as a boy,  Jim lived all over the world. He has traveled
to over forty countries, and has enjoyed learning about different cultures.
Over the years, he has also taught music, biblical languages, theology,
development studies, and church administration. It is with his help and
guidance that The Bulisa Project will move ahead.
